Malia sat on the edge of the grassy cliff, and gazed out at the open expanse of water below her. Here she would watch the waves, in awe of the power held in such a beautiful thing. At first, she feared dropping down into the abyss. Then, she wondered what it would be like if she did slip from the edge. She imagined the air moving past her face and being ripped from her lungs as she fell hundreds of feet, the blue-green water rising up to swallow her whole, its violent currents relentlessly breaking her body against the jagged rock below until she was with Sabri once more.

She supposed it was her thoughts that she feared more.

The Goddess could tell when she had such thoughts. She sat by Malia when she was on the edge, a silent force of reassurance. The overwhelming power of the waves always dwarfed in comparison to Isran’s awesome presence, so near.

“Should I be getting back to work?” Malia asked.

The Goddess held out Her hand, slender fingers pointing to a spot on the horizon where a curved rock jutted out from the water. “What do you see?” She asked.

Malia’s brow furrowed as she focused on the rock and watched in silence as waves much smaller than the ones lapping at the base of the mountain crashed against it and split apart, becoming one with the rest of the water. “The waves get broken up out there,” Malia began. “They’re smaller than the ones here.”

“The rock acts on the waves, stopping them before they get too large, too wild, too –” Isran met Malia’s eyes pointedly, “- dangerous. But it isn’t completely removed from the waves. The waves shape the rock in turn over time.”

Isran fell silent then to give Malia time to think. Malia had made progress according to the Goddess, but not enough by her own standards. She knew what was holding her back, the thing she couldn’t quite deal with. The pain was still too raw and tender to get a handle on.

Isran stood and extended a hand to help her from the edge. Malia had finally gotten used to the small rainbow of fire that briefly shot out from between their palms whenever she and the Goddess touched. They would be back to training, and Malia could be focused on her magic instead of her emotions.
